“As a co-op, we have the luxury of not being held down by one or two people that own the majority, but instead we get to work for the interests of our community and social and racial justice is something that is really important for our community.”
Jeremy Mathison – Founder and Operations Manager, Broken Clock Brewing Cooperative
Down near the industrial park, just east of the Mississippi River is a true hidden gem in the Twin Cities craft beer game, which is Broken Clock Brewing Cooperative. Everything from their large taproom to their plant-filled patio, Broken Clock is a place that you will want to see and also feel good for supporting. They are constantly working towards bettering the community around them by fighting for social and racial justice, while also highlighting the wonderful women that have helped them get to the spot that they are in now. (scroll down to Vol.2 to learn more about them!)
The sweet location, the creative names for their beers, and their push for more diversity in this industry are just a few reasons why Broken Clock is a must-see for people in the area.
Jeremy Mathison – The Mini-Interview
I had the opportunity to visit with Broken Clock’s founder, Jeremy Mathison, along with some of the rest of their amazing team that helps make this brewery run.
Below is the interview with Jeremy, as we went over what makes Broken Clock a place that should be an inspiration for all other makers in Minnesota and throughout the rest of the country.
What is something you want your customers or potential customers to know about broken Clock?
“First and foremost, we are a community owned cooperative, which means we are 100% owned by our members equally.
This is what is unique about is, we are here to serve our employees and our community. Our customers know that the money they spend here is staying within the local community.”
Who or what influences the choices regarding the brewery
“The community and our members. We love getting feedback, we love hearing what people want, and we love being as intentional as possible with everything we do.
Working with Brewing Change Collaborative was a very intentional move of ours, as every week we sit down as a staff and go through every facet of the company. Every Person from the beer tenders to the delivery driver to the marketing person has a say in the type of beer we want to make.”
What is something you are doing good for the world or for the local community
Every year, our members vote on 6 non-profits that they want to support, so each year we put a big focus on those. The more you do the more you want to do, and we can never do enough because there is so much support that everyone needs.
Working with Brewing Change Collaborative has been a huge benefit for us, because it has allowed us to look internally as a company and organization, but also as an industry as a whole.
This is a very white male dominated industry, so unless organizations are willing to put in the effort and the work to make the change, it never will change, much like every other industry in this country. It takes a huge effort, and I know that we are doing our best to improve and be better.
As a co-op, we have the luxury of not being held down by one or two people that own the majority, but instead we get to work for the interests of our community and social and racial justice is something that is really important for our community.”
